    Create hookah like on the photo

    Indian or not, pipe’s a source of pleasure among the young. See how it’s made and holdover the simple steps in making it.

    Now when we created a new project import image plane for front camera:
    (View->Image Plane->Import Image) and select hookah

    Now when it's selected press Ctrl+a to view Attribute editor for this item,
    input in field alpha gain 0.5 (it's for better grid viewing),
    and lower in Placement Extras at Center there three fields, input in third -30, at all must be 0 0 -30

    Start to make a curve for a base (Select CV curve tool with option 3Cubic degree)
    In corner put 2 or 3 points to get it sharper, but not point on point, just close to it.

    Begin to tweak a curve
    It must be something like this (I'm not made any special just moved verities):

    Select move tool (hit w) then hold d (moving pivot point mode) and c (snap to curves) key
    and click middle mouse button on curve, drag pivot point into lower part of curve.

    Create revolve from this curve (select curve and then Surfaces->Revolve)with default options

    Select image plane and adjust center X, input 0.2 and image plane will be at center of our base.
    Now create with same way upper part of hookah
    I made rough curve and then tweak point and also move pivot point at end of curve's lower part:

    Now create revolve for this curve (Surface->Revolve)
    On this picture you can see that base is smaller than upper part.

    So adjusting base - select all control vertices on base curve
    but without two that stays on left and just move them a little to the right.

    Doing revolve on them and move it on there places:

    Select CV curve tool again and make curve for last part,
    move pivot point like on picture and revolve:

    Add three isoparms like on picture:

    Create bend deformer input curvature 0.5 and high bound 0.4,low bound -1,
    move deformer a little:

    Select deformer and surface and group them together, and rotate, move group to achief this:

    Make final adjustments for model
    Select to surfaces and mark circular fillet with options
    Check Reverse primary surface normal, Radius 0.05, Position and Tangent tolerance 0.001:

    When fillet created (see below), select each surface that we have
    and set tessellation method to high quality (with UV divisions 5 on 5), make it for each surface:
    (on that step you can make a test render, to see a seam)

    Create another one circular fillet with options Check Reverse primary and secondary surface normal
    Radius set 0.04, Position Tolerance 0.001, Tangent tolerance 0.01. And also set tessellation
    in high quality with 5 on 5 divisions.

    That's all, modeling is finished,
    in next lesson we will start make materials and render it with MentalRay:

    In this lesson we will start render hookah in MentalRay.
    Open render setting windows and choose Mental Ray from renders list

    Create Image based light:

    Load HDRI image (in this example I used free HDRI Dock-Sphere-FREE.hdr )
    you can download free hdri images also from http://www.debevec.org/Probes/
    In Render Stats turn off Primary Visibility
    Select mentalraylbl1 (light sphere) and scale down it to 100.

    Now begin to make a base material, start with blinn:

    Tweak this blinn as on picture
    Eccentricity 0.2, Specular Roll Off 0.7, Reflectivity 0.95
    At MentalRay field, Reflection Blur and Rays 60:

    Create ramp, connect it to transparency of blinn and tweak it,
    Type U ramp, for white color set value 0.95:

    Turn on raytrace refractions, set index 1.3:

    Create another blinn for upper parts of hookah:

    Tweak it as shown:

    And for bowl create also blin and tweak it
    Eccentricity 0.2, Specular Roll Off 0.75,
    Specular color just a little move to the right (Value 0.6),
    Reflection Blur 20, Reflection Rays 60:

    Go to Mental Ray render setting set it to Production quality
    And turn on Final gather:

    Create three spot light
    Left intensity 0.6, right 0.4, behind hookah 1:

    Look throw each spot light it's must cover hookah:

    Set color gain for image based light, set value 2:

    That is all, that is basic rendering with MentalRay and HDRI.
